Hydrogen Energy

Hydrogen Energy brings together the very latest in thinking about low-carbon energy. And it gives us a real chance to generate clean electricity on a massive scale. Hydrogen-fuelled power plants with carbon capture and storage is a new idea that combines a number of existing technologies in a unique way to create low-carbon energy.

The company’s initial projects are intended to dramatically reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the power sector – the largest source of man-made carbon dioxide emissions (nearly twice as much as comes from the transport sector). The technology can be applied to any fossil fuel but the benefits from coal are greatest.

Coal will continue as a viable option for power generation because it is plentiful, relatively inexpensive and easy to transport. Identified global coal reserves can meet present levels of demand for 200 years and are particularly abundant in China, India and the United States, some of the world’s largest and fastest growing economies.

Hydrogen Energy has at least two projects which will generate electricity by producing hydrogen made from fossil fuels, while deploying CO2 capture and storage.

The California Project will use a synthetic form of coal called “pet coke”, which is an oil refining byproduct to generate low carbon hydrogen for electricity. At the same time, about 4 million metric tons of carbon dioxide a year will be captured, then transported by pipeline to the California oil fields and stored in oil reservoirs thousands of feet below the surface, where it will flush out additional oil that traditionally could not be recovered. This process, called Enhanced Oil Recovery, has been used extensively in Texas.

The recently-announced Abu Dhabi project will produce hydrogen from natural gas. The CO2 produced will be deployed in the same manner as the California Project. The Abu Dhabi project will provide 420 megawatts of electricity, which is 5% of Abu Dhabi’s current power generation.
