There have been two coal-fueled IGCC electric facilities built in the United States to date. The Wabash River Repowering Project was the first, located in West Terre Haute, Indiana, and is owned by SG Solutions and Duke Energy (formerly Cinergy). The facility was built in 1995 and used coal as a feedstock exclusively until 2001 when it switched to petroleum coke.
The Polk Power Station, located about 30 miles east of Tampa, FL, is owned by Tampa Electric (TECO). The facility was built in 1996 and still uses coal to this day.
Four other coal-powered facilities are currently in operation. They are located in the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Spain, and Japan. The list of current IGCC coal-fueled electric facilities is listed below:
