Another extremely useful byproduct of coal is sulfur. Using clean coal technologies, sulfur can be either isolated or trapped as a sulfur oxide (SOX) before it escapes into the atmosphere. Industrial sulfur and sulfur dioxide (H2SO4) can be used for one of many applications, including:
- Vulcanized rubber
- Fertilizers
- Exfoliates
- Bleach
- Refrigerants
- Paper manufacturing
- Rayon
- Cellophane
- Epsom salts
- Gunpowder
